Short Walking Route: Caw
Start Point: Kiln Bank Cross, near Broughton Mills
Distance: 4¼ miles, (6¾ km)
Climb: 1,500 feet, (460 metres)
Time: 2½ to 3½ hours
Starting at the small parking place near the levels where the road crosses from Broughton Mills to Kiln Bank, we can head off along the 'Park Head Road' path until the craggy South West flank of Caw comes in to view. From Old Park Beck we can pick our way up through the rock outcrops to the summit of this cracking little fell. The views are truly breathtaking and we'll take time at the top to take it all in and recover from the steep climb. We could head off towards Pikes, follow the River Lickle for a while then make our way round to Jackson Ground, or we could get there directly across Long Mire Beck. The choice will be yours. From there we will skirt round Raven's Crag and descend to the Levels at Kiln Bank Cross.
There should be time to enjoy a stop at the Blacksmiths Arms in Broughton Mills for a bite to eat and a drink. A perfect introduction to the South Lakes.
Here are some pictures of the route, and some views from the top. They're better in real life though, I'm sure you'll agree.
